The selection of a water pump involves many problems, such as quality, efficiency, cost performance, and so on. Here we mainly discuss the flow of the pump and the problems related to the flow.
According to the relationship between flow and head, water pumps can be divided into flow pumps and heat pumps. Axial flow pumps are typical flow pumps, which are characterized by a large flow and a small head. Centrifugal pumps (especially multi-stage centrifugal pumps) can lift water to a high height, but the flow is relatively small. The flow attenuation curve is used to describe that when the lifting height increases, the flow of the flow pump will decrease sharply, while the flow attenuation curve of the heat pump is much smoother.
Although there is no clear division between these two types of submersible pumps, they still have different emphases on flow and head in design. There are some pumps on the market with a large nominal flow but small power. Don't think this kind of pump is very efficient. It is at the expense of the head. Of course, if it is used for internal filtration or flow generation, there is no problem.
There is a certain relationship between the head, flow, and power. To ensure sufficient head and flow, corresponding power must be provided, which cannot be saved. It should be noted that the low-power water pump, due to its poor lifting capacity, not only has a small head but also the flow attenuation curve is particularly steep, that is, with the increase in height, the flow will drop sharply. Therefore, when the lifting height is relatively large, the power should be taken as an important reference index.
The actual flow of the pump is usually not easy to judge. If you only look at the flow indicators provided by the manufacturer, there may be great differences. The attenuation of the actual flow of the upper filter, especially the bottom cylinder filter, should not be underestimated. I have seen an imported pump with 11W power and a flow rate of up to 1000L / h. It is not marked with a head. After understanding, I know it is a flow-making pump, which is not suitable for lifting water at all. If there is no lift marked on the package, you can refer to the power index. A low-power pump cannot have a high lift.
There is a certain proportion between the flow of the water pump and the volume of the aquarium. Generally speaking, the flow/hour should reach at least 2-3 times the volume of the aquarium. For example, for a 200L aquarium, the flow should reach more than 400l/ hour, preferably more than 600l/ hour. The flow here refers to the actual flow, which can be roughly estimated according to 50% - 70% of the nominal flow of the pump, and the specific judgment is based on the pump power and head.
The flow rate has a great relationship with the capacity of the filtration system. There are many filter materials, so a larger flow rate is required. Only when the proportion of the two is appropriate, the efficiency is high. In the case of DIY filters, pay attention to the proportion of filter material quantity and pump flow, and refer to the finished filter for specific standards.
